Picture this, I was invited to eat to a new friend’s house and she was cooking, she invited a few more other people and the idea was to show off one typical six from her home country India.
It was a regular night, nothing too crazy, I really didn’t know much about their food so I didn’t really knew what to expect. Just know, I don’t really enjoy spicy food.
As soon as I enter the apartment I can feel and smell all the spicy and spices, I knew just with that they eat a ton of it. I am not used to eat too many spices or anything, remember I am born and raised in Colombia and food here don’t have much spicy or spices.
Good thing the host asked who of us didn’t like spicy food, so we got a different dish. But here is the thing, even without spicy, it was not the type of food I really enjoyed. Specially for all the spices on it, I fell it was TOO MUCH for me, is hard to explain but just by the look of it you know how overpowering the taste is going to be.
It wasn’t my type of food, just like that.
Here is the main topic about this mail. Food is deeply associated with each country culture, but also with each one family attachment and childhood memories. It is a fact that you associate food, smells with memories and you have a big deal of cultural baggage. How can you tell someone you don’t really enjoy their food?
Me and you are intelligent and respectful people. If you tell me you dont like the food from my country or the food my family makes, I understand and you will too. Taste and likings are endless and you can't force on anyone to like the same thing you like. It comes for food, books, movies, women, everything.
But I’ve seen some Colombians taking it too personal. If a foreigner come and don’t really like food, what you can do about it? Don’t take it personal. Is just likings and move on with your live.
Truth be told, Colombian food is extremely good because every ingredient in it is organic and natural, “sacado de la tierra”. That’s why when you try Colombian food in US or Canada, it doesn’t taste the same, you can taste the how fresh and organic the food is in Colombia, I can tell you that.
For some people they take it too personal, I have seen it on my twitter account.
If you get offended by it, probably you are not grown up enough to understand that you dont need to base your entire personality in your nationality. Can you say they are right? Yeah, to a foreigner our cousin don’t really have much appeal, Mexicans are the kings of it, they marketed their food as much as they can and its worldwide renowned. Plus it’s extremely good.
Does it means I don’t like Colombia food, I DO love Colombian food, and how my grandma and mother cook. I would never change a dish from my house for anything that’s a fact.
What I can tell you is to come, try and see what you like from here. People are more than open to recommend you good restaurants and places. People love when they love their country food, but also know that you need to accept people sometimes won’t like it. Recommend something else and continue with your life.
