My take on Colombian politics
Take into account that I never watch news, not affiliated with any party, just want to share the most logical explanation about politics here
If you follow my Twitter-X account, you know I completely despise anything related to politics, specially people that take it to personal. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy to debate about why some politicians are good, bad, popular or why I believe someone is going to lose or win.
Also depends with who I am speaking to, if someones is too dumb to feel ofended I immediately change conversation and just try lo leave the room. I don’t like to argue with losers haha.
Now, I would dare to say that Colombia is a conservative country, deeply attached to catholic principles, strong family values and more traditional. In Colombia historically the political power was controlled by Liberals and Conservatives.
I think is important to understand how culturally our society acts and thinks, and I believe that, we are mostly traditional and conservative. This not necessary applies in the big cities because of the influence of western values, but majority of the country I believe it is.
Here comes my “controversial” take on Colombian politics: since the 1980’s EVERY level of political stage is influenced by cocaine traffic.
My point is, now we can’t associate a truly ideological party or set of politicians that are guided by true principles and ethical ground. I mean, people like that exists, but my guess is people that are in the position to make decisions are always trying to help someone involved in illegal business.
My way of thinking is pretty simple: all illegal armed groups in Colombia (guerrilla or paramilitary) are only fighting for one thing and it is the control of cocaine routes. If there is money to be made, they will do anything.
Where the problem resides is that all this groups need politicians to promote some kind of help. They always need some local mayor, “consejal”, even senator or congress man that will pass laws to benefit them.
Scandals like this happen all the time, not because is liberal, conservative, leftist or right wing, “Uribista” or “Petrista”. In the great scheme of things, we can’t imagine how profitable cocaine business is, at the end, at least 70% of cocaine comes from Colombia.
This article I just wanted to state this: I don’t believe politicians, not from here, USA, Europe, anywhere. I know they always are trying to favor their own interests and in every country it is like that. They camouflage their selfish takes with principles of morality and the idea to help others.
And Colombia is the same, our politicians have to deal with illegal groups and cocaine. Is a reality, and is also a reality that that kind of money will be permeating all levels of political decision.
We have a saying: “Por la plata baila el mono” - The monkey will dance for money… Everyone will do anything for a quick buck, now just imagine being able to get millions and millions just to help a friend of a friend…
