Cases of scopolamine, massacres, and murders have increased, even in my city, Santa Marta, which used to be very different. It was a very peaceful city, and just yesterday, a family was massacred.
Why do I say this? Because my friends are poor, and they inform me daily about how people are being killed in their neighborhoods.
This doesn't appear in newspapers or anywhere else. On the other hand, I know people who handle government data, and they are forbidden from showing what's happening. But as a foreigner here, you don't have any problems.
Unfortunately, it's the poor Colombians who are suffering.
I say this because the risk now is not for foreigners but for Colombians, and I will explain why.
There is a new generation of drug lords with a low profile. The flashy narco figures who used to flaunt luxury as before no longer exist. Now, they have humble houses and regular cars. The problem is that I believe everyone is involved in the drug trafficking business ever since Petro came to power.
Petro's government is very lenient with criminals, and that's why they are taking advantage of it. This has led to the largest cocaine production in the country's history this year.
When you combine this with the pandemic crisis, the lack of job opportunities, and a government that is lenient with criminals, it results in an increase in cocaine production.
Cocaine always brings violence; gangs settle their scores and take justice into their own hands, but this doesn't affect the foreigners much.
Colombian criminals are not going to risk getting in trouble with the USA or another government in the world by targeting a foreigner. They prefer to continue their activities in Colombia because there is no justice here, and they go unnoticed.
The moment they get involved with a foreigner, international authorities start pursuing them, and they won't do that.
Now, changing the subject, I see many people from Bogotá complaining about scopolamine. The target seems to be Colombians now. However, you should be aware of their strategies to avoid any harm.
I would say that if you are blonde with blue eyes, you won't necessarily be a scopolamine target unless you look like an easy target, which sometimes happens. But these criminal groups are now focusing on Colombians.
Here is a guide that I hope will be useful for you.
If you plan to stay in Colombia for more than a month, I recommend my mentorship program, in which I will assist you personally in any way I can, from reviewing Tinder profiles to recommending places that ensure your safety.
